Workshop: AI in animal (health) research – transient hype or the future?

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, both in research and clinical work, has the possibility to increase efficiency, accuracy and potentially drive the field into areas that are more complex.

See Below for registration !

In this workshop we want to spark interest through good examples in the AI area. We will present good examples of how AI can be implemented in medicine and how successful projects have evolved from idea to actual implementation. The workshop will focus on veterinary medicine as an approach but the framework can be used also in other areas. The idea is to make research and clinical work more data driven through automation, data analysis and the potential implementation of new sensor systems.

The workshop will end with a group discussion on in which scenarios and projects to employ AI and how to get started.

The workshop is a collaboration with AI Sweden and the attendees will get:

-          An introduction to AI

-          Inspiration and examples on how AI can be used in veterinary medicine

-          Inspiration on how to proceed if you want to implement AI in your research

The presentations are:

-          Title: AI in diagnostic imaging - From the research sandbox to the clinical wilderness
CMIV conducts focused front-line research within multidisciplinary projects providing solutions to tomorrow’s clinical issues. The mission is to develop future methods and tools for image analysis and visualization for applications within health care and medical research. CMIV is a part of Linköping University, located at the Linköping University Hospital, and thus a partner of AI Sweden.

AIDA is a national arena for research and innovation in medical image analysis, hosted by CMIV. AIDA is a cross-disciplinary collaboration aiming for largescale use of AI in healthcare. AIDA is a part of both Medtech4Health och SciLifeLab.

CMIV / AIDA has a set of their own machines for data collection, among them several MR machines and a unique photon counting CT. In addition to its extensive research on human health applications the organization also has a collaboration with Kolmården Zoo where animals such as the brown bear and lions have been studied.

The talk will focus on technology for health care solutions with a strong connection to AI.

Speaker: Claes Lundström, Research Director at Sectra, Adjunct Professor at Linköping University

-          Title: Deep Learning, First Steps - How to Break the Ice

Synthetic MR develops unique technology to support a faster MR workflow. Synthetic MR is a new partner of AI Sweden and just recently started developing support functions for automatic classification and recognition of body parts within their images.

The talk will be on experiences made going from zero to advanced functionalities in images recognition in record time.

Speaker: Markus Malmgren, CTO at SyntheticMR

-          Title: Benefits of applying AI to my research

Jonas has, in cooperation with AI Sweden been quite successful in employing AI as a toolset to further his research on Baltic sea birds.

In this talk Jonas will focus on the impact AI has had on his research results, what he has learned on how to setup an AI project, implications on staffing projects, collaboration with AI Sweden, the value of hackatons and how he envisions future use of AI tools will strengthen his research etc.

Speaker: Jonas Hentati-Sundberg, Associate Professor, SLU

-          Title: How can SLU researchers benefit from the AI Sweden partnership

Fredrik has a 20 year background in Computer Vision and AI with a focus on its application in solutions for factory automation, construction, farming and food preparation. Fredrik previously headed Computer vision in the RISE Applied AI Center and now with both AI Sweden and the Computer Vision Laboratory at Linköping University.

Fredrik will have a short talk on how your projects can be helped by AI Sweden and other national initiatives.

Speaker: Fredrik Viksten, PhD, Senior Expert, AI Sweden

The workshop will end with a group task on how to implement AI at SLU in three areas:

-          Teaching

-          Research

-          Communication

Fika will be served during the afternoon.

The workshop is only open for registered participants. Register at https://forms.gle/7CEHzQcfCqCLua6g9 The deadline for registering is 7 January 2022, but the seats are limited so don’t waste your possibility to participate by waiting to register.
