Presentation
I have worked as a laboratory animal veterinarian for 30 years, both at medical universities, in the pharmaceutical industry and since 2009 at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). I earned my PhD degree at Karolinska Institutet and my degree as associate professor (docent) and professor at SLU. I am European Specialist in Laboratory Animal Medicine (Dipl. ECLAM) with postgraduate training from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) and Newcastle University in the UK.
Currently I am past president of the European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine and president of IACLAM, the International Association of Colleges of Laboratory Animal Medicine, which represents > 1600 veterinary specialists from Europe, USA, Japan, South Korea and India. The purpose of IACLAM is to promote the role of the veterinarian in animal research thereby improve animal welfare and the quality of science.
Undervisning
I am teaching students in laboratory animal medicine and science at SLU. I am also involved in international postgraduate courses at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in Spain.
Forskning
I have performed independent and collaborative research in rodents, rabbits and pigs, together with scientists in Europe, for generating knowledge in lab animal medicine (anaesthesia, analgesia, housing and training of animals) as well as human medicine (bone regeneration, diabetes, kidney transplantation, coagulation). Currently, I have a PhD-student who is examining factors that influence stress during induction of gas anaesthesia i rodents.
Samverkan
I am currently co-supervisor of two PhD-students at SLU in the field of imaging for measurement of bone density in cats and bone regeneration for spinal fusion in dogs, with the pig as model. These projects are related to diseases in pet animals
Bakgrund
I trained to be a veterinarian in Munich, Germany and worked at small animal hospitals in Sweden for 2 years before I began my career as a laboratory animal veterinarian at Linköping University. During my postgraduate training I relocated to Karolinska Institutet where I was head of Veterinary Resources before I started on a PhD. After 11 years as a university veterinarian, I spent 6 years in a pharmaceutical company (Biovitrum). In 2009, I was employed as researcher at SLU.
Handledning
I have supervised a number of veterinary students for their master thesis and co-supervised several PhD-students and residents. Currently I have one PhD-student, one resident and one veterinary student.
