Field study in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Between December 16 and 27, Wondmagegn Tafesse Tirkaso carried out a filed survey in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on households' food waste behavior in urban areas of Addis Ababa. The field study is part of the research activities of an ongoing research project on food waste and loss and the sustainability of urban food systems in developing countries. The project is funded by SLU's Urban Futures and is carried out by a research team from the Department of Economics at SLU, led by Assem Abu Hatab, in collaboration with researchers from Kotebe Metropolitan University (KMU) in Addis Ababa.
The aim of the project is to develop a research network with Ethiopian research institutes in areas of food security, food loss and waste management and urban sustainability, and to conduct an exploratory study to investigate the interlinkages between food loss and waste and food security and their interplay in influencing the sustainability the urban food system in Addis Ababa.
During his stay in Addis Ababa, Wondmagegn Tafesse Tirkaso held a workshop at KMU where he gave an overview of the research and teaching activities of the Department, presented the ongoing research activities focusing on Ethiopia and discussed possibilities to further strengthen collaboration between the department of economics at KMU.
