Multi-level impacts of COVID-19 on Food and Nutrition Security: Insights from Africa

seminarier, workshops |

Division of Rural Development invites you to a Webinar with Alfred R. Bizoza, Associate Professor in Agricultural Economics from the University of Rwanda.

The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified some of the structural challenges faced with African countries due to disruption in demand and supply chains. It has worsened the status of food and nutrition security, changes in lifestyles from social and psychological behaviors, increase in social protection cases, and expanding government’s budget to finance the containment and recovery measures against the pandemic including food and cash transfers. Majority
of people in the informal sector could not work due to government’s restrictions including women and the youth; this has affected their ability to earn income to support their access to food and other home needs (Bizoza and Sibomana, 20201; Bukuluki et al., 20202; Renzaho, 20203) see references below.

ALFRED R. BIZOZA holds a PhD and is an Associate Professor in Agricultural Economics from the University of Rwanda (UR). His research areas include agriculture economics, economic perspectives of land, climate change adaptation, institutions, and gender. He completed his PhD in June 2011 from Wageningen University, the Netherlands. He was a Visiting Scholar at Michigan State University (2009) and Cambridge University (2017).

He published in several peer review journals and contributed to various policy drafting in Rwanda and elsewhere in Africa. He also served as a non-executive Board Member of the National Bank of Rwanda after the Government’s appointment during 2013-2018.
