Presentation

My research interests have been related to forest restoration and adaptation of forest management regimes to global change. For example, I have studied the restoration of mixed broadleaved-conifer stands through natural and artificial regeneration. I have researched the effects of various silvicultural practices on the survival, growth, and stem quality of seedlings, saplings, trees, and growth factors such as light, nutrients, and water. Abiotic and biotic interactions, including effects from insects, granivorous rodents and ungulates, have been studied using ecological and eco-physiological research techniques to better understand growth responses. For the last ten years, my research has also been directed towards continuous cover forestry and understanding growth in mixed-species stands and effects on ecosystem services and biodiversity from different forest management intensities. I believe that applied silvicultural research needs to be developed in collaboration with other disciplines, especially for studying the effects of silvicultural practices on other valued aspects of forests.
