Power of odor to control human pathogens on leafy vegetables

We will kick of the season with a seminar given by Bara’a Alkhaled.

During the last decades, the number of foodborne illness outbreaks associated with the fresh produce including leafy vegetables has been increased worldwide. As contamination of leafy vegetables may occur in the entire agri-food chain, post-harvest processing may not counteract hazards during pre-harvest step. Furthermore, contaminated products are most often consumed or discarded by the time the outbreak is a fact. Therefore, early detection is required to prevent outbreaks.

Odour-based methods are a novel and unique approach to early detect contamination using volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The characteristics of odour compounds of foodborne pathogens could help in early detection of contamination in leafy vegetable and provide an early warning of the risks of outbreaks’.
