INFOBIOM workshop

Welcome to the second INFOBIOM workshop – New and innovative methods for collecting data on species, habitats and important structures in forest ecosystems.

Call for abstracts and welcome to the second workshop of INFOBIOM – The Nordic Network for Integrated Forest Resource and Biodiversity Monitoring, from 15th to 16th November 2023 at the Elite Hotel Mimer, Umeå, Sweden.

The Earth's biodiversity suffers a catastrophic decline due to human impact on the environment. In response, the European Commission has adopted a long-term strategy for protecting nature and reversing the degradation of ecosystems that includes actions and commitments to halt biodiversity loss. Forest ecosystems, including boreal forests, represent one of the most species-rich habitat types worldwide. However, biodiversity is notoriously difficult to map and monitor. INFOBIOM will address important variables and indicators used in assessment of habitat quality and hence the preservation of biodiversity.

The workshop focuses on new and innovative methods for collecting data on species, habitat and important forest structures. Special focus will be on how to collect data across large areas using: 1) field inventories, 2) remote sensing, and 3) combinations of the two.

The two-day workshop includes refreshments, lunch, a social dinner, and is free of charge. The event starts at 10:00 on Wednesday 15th and ends at 13:00 on Thursday 16th of November 2023.

Deadline for registration and submission of abstracts is 20th of October.  You will be asked to provide a max 150 words abstract of your contribution in the application form.

After the workshop (at 14:00-15:00, Thursday 16th), there will be a seminar at SLU where Prof. Timothy Gregoire (Yale Univ.) will give a presentation entitled “The design of the National Forest Inventory for the Royal Government of Bhutan” and Prof. Juha Heikkinen (Luke) will give a presentation entitled “Cost-efficient sampling for environmental surveys” that everyone is welcome to attend.

Hotel and travel costs need to be covered by the participants. INFOBIOM partner organizations have funds to cover these costs. A limited number of researchers from the Nordic and Baltic countries and Germany that are not employees of INFOBIOM partner organizations can receive traveling grants. Especially young researchers are encouraged to apply for these. Besides the quality of the contribution (abstract), the gender balance will be considered in the evaluation of traveling grants.

We encourage all participants to travel in a way that minimizes the carbon footprint of the journey.

INFOBIOM is a SNS-funded network of Nordic researchers that brings together experts in forest monitoring and biodiversity. The network is led by NIBIO and includes partners from NINA, LUKE, SYKE, SLU, University of Copenhagen and University of Århus.
