I will tell you about my project regarding claw health and claw trimming in cattle. Lameness is one of the most important welfare issues in the dairy industry and it also create great economic loss for the farmer. Lameness is most commonly caused by claw lesions and claw trimming is one important factor to prevent claw lesions to arise.
The questions that we will investigate further in my project is:
- How do Swedish claw trimmers preform their everyday work?
- How to trim a cows claw in the best possible way to minimize claw lesions and adapt to today’s technology and housing systems?
- When are you supposed to trim to get the best claw health and minimize culling rates?
- How can we control claw trimming in everyday practice?
I will tell you about our plan to answer these questions. What have we done already and what are we planning to do.
