The large C stocks in Arctic soils, both in permafrost and seasonally-thawed soil layers, are vulnerable to accelerated decomposition with global warming, likely causing a positive feedback. CMIP6 Earth System Models incorporate detailed dynamics of direct effects of climate change on this globally-important C stock. However, indirect effects of climate warming, notably through plant-soil-microbe interactions and microbial community dynamics, are not yet incorporated, partly due to lack of mechanistic understanding.
This seminar aims at presenting some indirect effects of climate change on permafrost systems, attempts to derive underlying mechanistic understanding, in both upper soil (active layer) and permafrost layers, and to incorporate microbial dynamics in biogeochemical models, with an emphasis on the relationship between bacterial communities and soil functioning.
