New, exciting and useful AI technology for creating image material is emerging all the time. The technology even appears here and there in the programs we have always used for image processing and video editing. Read more about what you need to think about when using AI for pictures and videos.
Nowadays, it is easy for us to realise our imagination and future visions, but it is essential that we use AI image generation technology responsibly and for the right purpose, so we do not lose credibility. In certain cases, you can tell that an image is AI generated just by looking at it – but not always. Lying through pictures is much easier than before. We are now able to depict things such as elks sitting at school desks, and populate empty urban environments, but we need to clearly state that we have generated or modified images. And we need to use authentic images from our campuses, of our researchers and students when talking about them. Using AI generated images is not suitable in such instances.
If we generate pictures or video clips for showing specific environments, types of nature or individual species, we must verify the authenticity of the material, just as we would when we buy images from external suppliers. If you are unable to verify whether an image is authentic, ask someone that can.
Be careful before altering an image. Could modifying the image generate negative reactions? Are the arguments in favour of taking shortcuts and generating an image correct?
For the reasons mentioned above, we need to be clear when we use AI generated pictures or video clips. We must do this to maintain authenticity.
Fully AI generated pictures are not copyrighted – as long as they have not been retouched using active, non-automated creative choices. This means you cannot state you are the copyright owner of an AI image you have generated – even if you wrote the prompt. This means that, in theory, anyone is entitled to use the image you have generated. Carefully read through what applies for the AI tool you are using to generate images. You can also read more about copyright and AI from the Swedish Intellectual Property Office.
AI has improved subtitling and transcription tools, however the results are still far from flawless. Therefore, the material must always be revised and edited before publishing. There are additional subtitling guidelines that must be followed.
