The Seth M. Kempe scholarship fund grants scholarships to PhD students at the Faculty of Forest Sciences, SLU in Umeå, to promote scientific education and research through travel grants. The call is announced twice a year, in spring and autumn.
Scholarships are primarily awarded to PhD students to do parts of their studies at a foreign institution. Scholarships can also be awarded to cover travelling expenses, conferences and courses.
The Foundation's Board evaluates the applications and decides who are to be allocated funds. The last date of application is 11th April 2022.
To be eligible to apply for Seth M. Kempe's scholarship, the applicant shall:
- be a member of the Student Union at the Forest Faculty in Umeå (SHS).
- be actively conducting research at the Faculty of Forest Sciences, SLU in Umeå
- be living in Västernorrland, Västerbotten or Norrbotten counties.
The application must contain a completed application form and the following appendices:
Appendix 1. The applicant's CV
Appendix 2. Proof of membership in the Student Union at the Forest Faculty in Umeå (SHS).
The application must be sent by e-mail as a PDF file to the chairman of the Student Union: email@example.com. In subject, type "Scholarship Application S. M. Kempe". The PDF file should be named as follows: lastname_department_date-of-birth,
Decisions on applications are taken approximately one month after the last application date.

Required activity reporting
A report must be submitted to the fund within three months after completion of the visit abroad. The report should not exceed an A4-page, describing how the expected outcome was met and how the funds were dispensed.
Suitable documentation (such as a course syllabus, or conference programme) should be attached to the report. Payment will be made to the applicant's department who may request the funds once the report is received.
If no satisfactory report is received or if the trip is covered by other funding, the scholarship may be withdrawn.
