Göran Ericsson

Göran Ericsson
Department Chair and Chaired Professor in Wildlife Ecology

Presentation

My tenured professorship focuses on three main topics;

  • plant-animal interactions and animal ecology
  • the use of the biological resource base (e.g. wildlife, forests) in the boreal landscapes and the human user groups (e.g. hunters, tourists)
  • interactions between the resource base and the users

As the strategic leader of SLU:s competence area "Animal Ecology" I promote and encourage basic research, their application for a wider societal user, and outreach. Consequently we study a wide range of topics from herbivore-plant interactions via animal ecology, forestry, arctic issues, physiological stress in animals, adaptive natural resource management, to a range of human interactions with wildlife. A key feature of our studies is multi-species habitat use and movement ecology using state-of-the-art technology and analytical approaches. In Europe I am one of the forerunners in the studies of the human dimensions of wildlife.
Annually we give the advanced international two year Master program "Management of Fish and Wildlife Populations" where Human Dimensions is a signature subject. I also lead the research school "ECOS" – Ecology and Society. Commonly I am called to serve on various boards and committees of trust nationally and internationally, including governmental assignments.

Teaching

Graduate
I have developed the research school ECOS – Ecology and Society, jointly with members from the department of forest economics at SLU. Organiser and convener from 2017- and ongoing.

Undergraduate
I have developed the curriculum for and launched the advanced level, multidisciplinary course "Human Dimensions of Fish and Wildlife". The course is unique on the European level and is part of the International Master Program "Fish and Wildlife" which I am one of the developers of. I have furthermore developed the revised curriculum for the course "Hunting Tourism" focusing in natural resource use of wildlife in general. I have together with Lars Edenius revised the course package regarding Wildlife Management and Administration, this is cooperation with the Swedish Association for Hunting and Wildlife Management, I regularly teach on a variety of both undergraduate and graduate courses as a lecturer during shorter modules. I also participate as a teaching consultant on courses outside the academia, including governmental commissions. Below I list the courses where I have had or still have a major teaching responsibility as a lecturer.
