Sperm Quality Evaluation
The course covers the following fields: the concept of sperm quality, what it is and why it is needed in different situations; how it is evaluated from basic field laboratory to advanced research setting; how it is used for different species; pitfalls in sperm quality evaluation; how it can be improved in the future. There will be a series of tutor-led lectures, workshops and practical sessions.

Prior knowledge
Students should be admitted to a postgraduate program in animal science, biology, veterinary medicine, food science, nutrition, nursing, or related subjects, or to a residency program in veterinary scienceObjectives
After completing the course the student shall:
Be able to describe what sperm quality is and to explain the different methods for evaluating it;
Have the capacity to explain the methods behind the different assays; to understand the shortcomings of each; to evaluate the relevance of the output from such assays; to determine the suitability of the sample for its intended purpose, taking into account the animal species; to communicate the results of the evaluation to the animal owner.
Having acquired or further developed a set of competences, the student will be able to identify particular challenges within andrology and decide how to deal with them; be able to advise others on interpreting the results and the appropriate action to take; be able to contribute to a discussion on development of more appropriate methods of assessment in the future.

Additional information
There will be a pre-course assignment consisting of reading the literature to prepare an oral presentation summarizing a particular method of sperm quality evaluation to the other students at the start of the course, plus a written critical evaluation of this method in the light of what they have learnt on the course.Responsible department
