Applying for next semester's courses – tips and planning

Each semester, the Division of Educational Affairs invites all SLU students to a joint information session on applying for the following semester's courses. This session is a chance for students to get support in planning their studies for the next semester.
When?
- 24 September
- 13:00-14:00
This semester's joint information meeting will take place on Wednesday, 24 September. The date is set in consultation with the faculty programme directors and published at least one year in advance on the page with information about semester dates.
The time is always 13:00–14:00, and programme directors are encouraged to schedule programme-specific information at 14:15 and onwards on the same day.
How?
The joint information session is done as two parallel webinars, one in English and one in Swedish.
- The webinar in English is intended for all English speaking students.
- The webinar in Swedish is intended for all Swedish speaking students.
Independent students are welcome to attend both webinars.
Content?
The Division of Educational Affairs will cover the following:
- Application, admission and important dates
- Fees (changing courses, scholarships, being on time, the Migration Agency) – only at the session held in English
- Student finance and approved leave from studies (session in Swedish)
- How do I plan my studies? Degree requirements, course schedule and entry requirements
- Where can I find the degree requirements? How do I apply? Difference between general degree and professional degree
- Degree project
- Studying abroad (mobility)
- Support functions (brief overview of our support page on the student web, where we show how to find information about study guidance, SLU Career, support for students with disabilities, study technique/SLU Library, admission, student health services and the University Chaplaincy)
- Q&A
In addition to the study and career counsellors, admissions officers and mobility officers will be present at both sessions to provide information and answer questions.
Information for students
For students, there is a page with information about registering for next semester's courses on the student web. The page is in Swedish, but an English version is currently being prepared. Information about the webinars is also published under 'Student Events' on the student web.
Students are invited to the joint information meeting via Canvas and emails. We also ask all student unions to spread information about the date and content via their channels.
Your role as programme director
Inform and encourage students to attend both the joint information session and the session on their programme.
Programme information session
We would like you, as programme director, to schedule a session with programme information for your students. If you choose the same afternoon, we suggest starting at 14:15.
You schedule the Zoom meeting or book a room for the session yourself. If you book a room, you can inform the booking team that it is for programme information and refer to the study and career guidance team.
If you are holding your information session in connection with the joint session, please schedule a Zoom meeting/book a room from 13:00 so that you can take part in the joint information session together with the students.
You are responsible for inviting your students to the programme session. We suggest you also include information about the joint session in your invitation.
At the programme information session, we appreciate if you bring up the following, provided it is relevant to your programme:
- programme structure (syllabus, course schedule)
- degree requirements (be clear about whether the programme leads to a professional degree/general degree or both)
- core courses (compulsory, important for eligibility, etc.) in order to follow the programme structure
- tips for course selection, e.g. possible profiles/specialisations/areas of interest
- structure and any special entry requirements for degree projects (e.g. is a methodology course required)
- other aspects that are unique or important to the programme.
