Marketing SLU’s programmes
Student recruitment is a priority area at SLU and engages many parts of the organisation. The Communications Division plays an important role in coordinating the marketing activities aimed at prospective students.
A major development initiative is currently underway within the Communications Division focusing on the marketing of SLU’s programmes.
After several years of strong digital focus, we are now also investing in activities that enable more personal interactions, supported by an expanded group of student ambassadors. This includes reviewing which events we should attend and developing the structure for study visits to our campuses. Discussions are also ongoing about the marketing of specific programmes, where the need within the organisation is significant but resources are limited.
A long-term initiative has also begun to increase overall awareness of the university. More people need to know about SLU in order to consider studying with us. Work to raise awareness will run in parallel with the marketing of our programmes.
Marketing channels
We use a wide range of channels to reach prospective students. These are continuously evaluated and developed based on data and insights, as the behaviour of our target audiences changes over time. Below you can find information about some of our most important channels.
Programme pages
With a large number of daily visitors to slu.se, the programme pages are an important tool in our recruitment work. At all in-person meetings and in printed information, prospective students are referred to our website and the information available there.
The website is continuously updated in collaboration with different parts of the organisation to ensure that prospective students have access to clear, comprehensive and up-to-date information.
We are currently working to better highlight career opportunities after graduation. Information about salary levels and the proportion of graduates who have found employment one year after graduating is already presented, as we know these factors influence young people’s choice of education.
Education fairs
SLU participates in a number of major education fairs, both nationally and internationally. These events give us the opportunity to meet a wide range of prospective students.
Some visitors are already interested in our programmes and actively seek more information at our stand. Others may never have heard of us before and may not initially see an agricultural university as an option. These meetings give us the opportunity to start conversations and spark curiosity.
In 2026, we will also increase our presence at smaller local school fairs in order to meet even more upper secondary school students. These events are typically calmer, allowing for more in-depth conversations. A list of the fairs we attend can be found further down the page under Activities – 2026.
Open House
Each year, Open House events are organised at our three main campuses. Prospective students are invited to attend with their class and/or their parents to learn more about our programmes, experience student life and explore our campus environments.
The format may vary slightly from year to year, but from 2025 onwards the focus will be on in-person events rather than digital ones.
Representatives from the programmes and study and career advisers play an important role in making these events successful, together with the student unions and our student ambassadors.
Social media
Social media enables us to spark interest and share information about the university and our programmes. Our aim is to engage audiences and encourage more people to choose to study at SLU.
The Communications Division manages the following accounts:
- Instagram in Swedish: slu.sweden, slu.student
- Instagram in English: studyatslu
- TikTok
- National Facebook page
- International Facebook page
The Instagram accounts slu.student and studyatslu, the international Facebook page and our TikTok account are primarily used to reach prospective students, both nationally and internationally. The other channels are mainly aimed at different target groups but may also be used to share education-related content.
Content published on these channels is always adapted to the target audience and tone of each platform.
Advertising
SLU runs digital advertising continuously – around the clock, all year round. Digital advertising is cost-effective and easy to optimise based on our needs.
Our advertising appears on platforms such as YouTube, Snapchat and other social media channels. We also sponsor links on Google and Bing, allowing our advertisements to appear among the top search results.
In some cases, we also advertise in newspapers and on local public transport.
Education portals
There are many websites that collect and promote educational programmes in different ways. For the international market, SLU collaborates with Keystone, which means that SLU programmes are promoted on Educations.com.
Communication platforms
We use two digital communication platforms to support student recruitment.
Through Unibuddy, prospective students can chat directly with our student ambassadors and get answers to their questions.
Goin’ is a social network for newly admitted students where they can connect and build a community even before arriving at SLU. Through the platform, students can find future classmates, meet others with similar interests and backgrounds, and help each other prepare for moving to Sweden.
The purpose of Goin’ is to strengthen the student community and contribute to a more secure start to university life.
Student ambassadors
SLU students play an important role in promoting our programmes. They participate in a wide range of activities such as education fairs, events, Open House and Shadow a Student. Students also promote SLU and its programmes through various social media channels and by chatting on the platforms Unibuddy and Goin'.
More information about the work of student ambassadors can be found on the student web.
In recent years, we have invested considerable effort in recruiting more student ambassadors. In May 2025 there were 51 ambassadors; today we have 148, which among other things enables our expanded participation in school fairs.
Activities
Here we list student recruitment activities organised or attended by the Communications Division. In addition to these, many other initiatives are carried out at faculty and departmental level.
The content is continuously updated for the current and upcoming year.
