Communication survey 2025

Last changed: 26 November 2025

Communication is vital for achieving our goals, creating a good working environment and driving positive change. We are therefore conducting a survey to evaluate our current communication and identify strengths and areas for development.

What is being evaluated?

The evaluation covers five areas:

Communication understanding:
Understanding the role and value of communication within the organisation.

Communication organisation:
How internal and external communication is managed overall, and how the organisation approaches communication strategically, tactically and operationally.

Communication function:
How communication work is structured and whether tasks are carried out in an integrated or specialised way.

Communication climate:
How employees, communicators and managers contribute to a constructive communication climate through openness, dialogue and feedback.

Communication competence:
General communication competence within the organisation, the training provided to key individuals and any identified training needs.

The survey was developed by researchers at Mid Sweden University.

About the survey

All SLU employees will have the opportunity to respond. The survey takes approximately 6–8 minutes to complete, and all responses are completely anonymous.

The survey is open from 1–14 December.

You will respond from one of three perspectives: employee, manager with staff responsibility or communicator. A communicator is defined as someone who spends the majority of their working time on communication tasks.

Everyone can take part, regardless of length or type of employment.

Please answer the questions based on how communication works in your part of the organisation, i.e. your department or equivalent. The responses will then be compiled to given an overall result for the entire organisation.

The survey is conducted in full compliance with GDPR.

The results

The results will be presented in a report, which includes a communication index (KIX). This index will be used to evaluate and develop our communication, and to compare our performance with other organisations. The results will be presented at an overall level for the entire university.

More about the research behind the survey

Between 2016 and 2018, researchers at Mid Sweden University (Mittuniversitetet) collaborated with eleven organisations and companies to develop the KIX concept for evaluating communication maturity. The aim was to create a communication index that assesses an organisation’s ability to use communication effectively.

The KIX is a tool that identifies key factors influencing an organisation’s communication work, allowing it to assess the communication maturity level and providing recommendations for improvement. The maturity level is based on the knowledge and competence regarding the value of communication applied within the organisation.

The KIX survey tool is based on extensive research on communicative leadership, communicative organisations and strategic communication. Research has established a clear link between effective communication and organisational performance.

To date, more than forty organisations from both the public and private sectors have used the survey.
