Centre for Academic Language

Last changed: 05 June 2025

The Centre for Academic Language aims to develop work with academic language at SLU. Through us, you as a teacher can get support through e.g. lectures and workshops to develop students' academic language. We also offer individual tutoring to students.

Lectures and workshops

The Centre for Academic Language, which is part of the SLU University Library, provides support in the use of academic language to students and doctoral students throughout SLU. Through us, you as a teacher can get support in the form of lectures and workshops to support students' development in general competences. This can include, for example, introduction to reading strategies and reading techniques, academic writing, language preparation sessions for thesis work, oral presentation techniques and poster presentations. Our focus is to adapt the programme to the needs of the students and the content of the course.

Course development

We at the Centre for Academic Language can also support you as a teacher in developing the progression of students' academic language development. This can apply both in individual courses and at programme level. Support is provided both through individual conversations or in, for example, workshop format with the teaching staff.

Digital learning

The Centre for Academic Language offers digital support in the form of modules on writing, presenting and giving feedback/opposing that you as a teacher can integrate into your course pages in Canvas. You can find the modules in the library's search and write guide:

Individual tutoring for students

The Centre for Academic Language offers individual language tutoring to students during term time. We provide support in reading techniques, for writing assignments (academic papers, memos, lab reports and conference abstracts etc.) and for presentations. Students can receive support in both Swedish and English. There is also a drop-in service to meet with a language tutor on Wednesdays 13-15 during term time.

Support for those with reading and writing disabilities

Students with support needs due to, for example, dyslexia or neuropsychiatric disabilities can get so-called targeted pedagogical support by contacting FUNKA. Of course, all students are welcome to come to the Centre for Academic Language to discuss text and language!
