Swedish Launch of the WorldFish Project: "Sustainable Feeds for Resilient Aquatic Food Systems in Sub-Saharan Africa"

SLU is the academic partner in a 5-year WorldFish project funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD). Most welcome to our Swedish launch of this aquaculture project focusing on development and scaling of sustainable feeds for resilient aquatic food systems in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Aim: introduce Swedish stakeholders to the project "Sustainable Feeds for Resilient Aquatic Food Systems in Sub-Saharan Africa" (FASA), as well as to the Sub-Saharan African partners and WorldFish. This launch can also serve as a contact point for future collaboration.

Target group: Swedish stakeholders (academia, industry, organisations).

Background

SLU is the academic partner in a 5-year partnership with WorldFish funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD). The project, known as Development and Scaling of Sustainable Feeds for Resilient Aquatic Food Systems in Sub-Saharan Africa (FASA), will focus on the development of low-cost and highly nutritious aquatic feeds based on novel ingredients to improve the sustainability of aquatic food systems in Sub-Saharan Africa, mainly Kenya, Nigeria and Zambia. SLU's role in the project

Dr. Kartik Baruah, Swedish FASA project leader and Associate Professor at the Department of Animal Nutrition and Management at SLU, explains:

- SLU employs multidisciplinary approaches in addressing critical issues (e.g. poor nutrition and health, diseases) in aquaculture animals, both at national and international levels. SLU's role in the project is to bring together the expertise in the field of nutrition, health, genetics and epigenetics from SLU as well as its collaborating institutes. It is important to employ a holistic approach to address issues associated with feed and nutrition in tropical aquaculture species. One part will be to enhance feed acceptance and feed utilization in Tilapia and/or Catfish by "nutrition reprogramming". Researchers at SLU will supervise two doctoral students within the project.
