SLU student team "Algium" among the best at the NOBALIS Demo Day

On December 13th the student teams from 5 Nordic and Baltic universities pitched their food and biotechnology related business ideas to an international jury at the NOBALIS Demo Day. The teams have been working with their ideas and mentors throughout the fall in the NOBALIS Entrepreneurship and Innovation Capacity Development Program. In the course of three months, the teams elaborated their business models, marketing plans, product concepts, funding plans and pitching skills.

The ideas pitched at the Demo Day were related to biocosmetics, algae, cyanobacteria, food waste, lignin and aquaponics systems with focus on circular solutions, biomass reuse, reduction of environmental footprint and carbon capture.

The first and second price went to teams from Estonian University of Life Sciences working on biocosmetics and bioasphalt. The third price went to SLU student team Algium, whose idea was related to use of ducts for growing microalgae that would support greening of communities as well as carbon capture.

Facts:

The project NOBALIS (nobalis.eu) is a two-year project implemented by a consortium of Nordic and Baltic universities and innovation support organizations. The project supports student start-up ideas through NOBALIS Entrepreneurship and Innovation Capacity Development Program. The first round of program took place in the fall of 2022, second edition in 2023 and the last round will be implemented in the spring of 2024. NOBALIS is part of the European Institute of Technology (EIT) program EIT HEI Initiative: Innovation Capacity Building for Higher Education and is supported by EIT Food and funded by the European Union.
