Francisco X. Aguilar

Francisco X Aguilar Cabezas
Dr. Aguilar’s research focuses on the study of social-natural resources interactions particularly in regard to conservation and management of forest resources. Dr. Aguilar leads a Team of Specialists of the United Nations’ Economic Commission for Europe Timber Committee (Wood Energy), an Associate Editor with 'Environment, Development and Sustainability' and 'PLoS One'. He has received awards from the Earth Island Institute, World Resources Institute and Resources for the Future. He is a 2017 Brady J. Deaton Fellow of International Agriculture, the 2017 awardee for the MU campus faculty engagement, 2014 Gilbert White Fellow and 2006 Joseph Fisher Fellow granted by Resources for the Future in Washington DC. Dr. Aguilar current research portfolio includes the evaluation of public policy programs promoting sustainable boreal and temperate forest management, tropical forest conservation, and bioenergy. He is an expert in the application of spatial econometric methods to the study of forests and other natural resources. The scope and focus of his research complement his teaching responsibilities. He has successfully mentored graduates, Postdoctoral Fellows, Norman Borlaug and Cochran Fellows, and Research Associates from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe.

Teaching

Responsible for delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate instruction led by the Department of Forest Economics.  Courses include: SG0216 "Industrial Wood Supply Strategy", "SG0178 Sustainable management of boreal forests", "SG0151 Forest Economics".

Research

Application of economics principles to the conservation and sustainable management of forests. Topical areas include: econometrics, forest certification landowner behavior, public policy impact evaluation, spatial econometrics, wood energy.

Cooperation

Collaborative work with the United Nations' Economic Commission for Europe (Forestry and Timber Section) as Leader of Wood Energy Team of Specialists, Associate Editor: 'Environment, Development and Sustainability', 'Public Library of Science'.  Actively engaged in research with colleagues at African, Nordic and North American universities and research institutions.

Background

Originally from Ecuador, Francisco Aguilar earned academic degrees in Costa Rica, the UK and the USA with research and development experience across the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe.
