About the assignment
As hub coordinator, you represent SLU Urban Futures (UF) in- and externally. You will work to strengthen and initiate contacts and encourage transdisciplinary collaborations on urban development regionally, nationally and internationally. You will contribute to the planning, running and communication of activities within the platform, in collaboration with the wider platform team, the other future platforms and relevant units at all faculties. In your role, you increase visibility and practice outreach, engage in targeted publications based on your hub work together with UFs communication team and to explore and nurture possibilities for getting external funding for research and collaboration. You will be the contact person at your campus and spread information about platform activities, calls, events etc. relevant for urban development.

The UF regional hubs as organizational units anchor the platform within SLU at the main campuses and within their local regions in society. Those hubs and the platform’s activities shape and communicate discourses of urban sustainability. More broadly, the Ultuna Hub connects to ongoing urban research at Ultuna campus, through e.g. relations to relevant research groups, presence at conferences, organizing of seminars and outreach activities to build relationships with diverse research fields realising collaboration across faculties and departments. Further, the hub is contact point for societal actors to position SLU as a relevant collaboration partner and detect relevant research questions at society-academia interfaces.

You will be expected to contribute to the development of SLU Urban Futures urbanscapes work. At the platform we position SLU’s expertise in an urban realm by adopting a landscape perspective to critically assess how complex sustainability challenges manifest not just in cities, but across landscapes. We are interested in how the relationship between people, place and processes of urbanisation produce local, place-based particularities, with a current emphasis on SLU’s key areas such as water, health, food, energy, and forests.

Your background
We are looking for an agile, communicative as well as structured and independent colleague with a PhD, with experience and interest in urban development and a background in relevant science fields (such as landscape architecture, geography, urban planning, environmental communication, sociology or political science). You must be familiar with and have experience of interdisciplinary research relevant for urban development. We expect the applicant to have very good knowledge of English and Swedish as we are working with (regional) stakeholders within Sweden as well as in an international collaboration context. Furthermore, experiences of coordination roles, management of projects and events as well as relevant publication records are meritorious. When assessing applicants, great importance is given to personal qualities such as your ability to collaborate and engage people.

About us

SLU Urban Futures is one of four future platforms at SLU. The aim of the platforms is to foster transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary ways of working as well as future-oriented teaching and research. The platform operates across all faculties at SLU and stimulates collaboration with relevant societal actors.

By being a living, interactive interface between academia and society, SLU Urban Futures operations aim to: a) identify needs for knowledge, through projects based on synthesis and analysis, and generate academic decision support for issues relevant to society; b) Identify and develop new research issues as support for solving future problems through collaboration with relevant societal partners; and c) develop interdisciplinary working methods by initiating and coordinating cooperation across academic disciplines.

UF builds links to the urban world by connecting SLU’s existing strengths to an urban realm. By using a landscape perspective, we develop a particular urban position with a focus on urbanscapes; such as food-, health-, forest- as well as urban water- and energyscapes. UF will continue leveraging these themes to enrich an understanding of the urban realm, strengthening inter- and transdisciplinary work at SLU, using a landscape perspective that brings together spatial and socio-ecological approaches, making use of a criticality lens to target efforts, and offer a living lab approach to safeguard arenas for learning and co-production of knowledge (UF Matrix, 2023).
