PhD position in Silviculture of mixed forest

The department is looking for a new PhD student in silviculture. Silviculture and forest management have a central role at the department with 3 professors and 3 associate professors. We are looking for a motivated candidate who is specifically interested in the sustainable forestry of southern Sweden.

Description PhD Silviculture:

In this 4-5-year project the student will primarily do research in silviculture and regeneration of mixed forest of Scots pine and Norway spruce in southern Sweden. The PhD studies include establishment and analysis of field based experiments with the overall aim to investigate the potential of mixed forest establishment. The PhD student will get a research education in silviculture with training in forest growth & yield modelling, ecophysiology and sustainable forest management. The project is co-funded by Södras research foundation and therefore we suggest an internship at Södra forest association included in the project. The PhD student will be included in our research team with focus on forest management using empirical data and mechanistic modelling. We do research on all types of forest management systems and a wide range of forestry use, including forest conservation management. Our team are responsible for the teaching in silviculture on two masters- and one bachelor program.

Qualifications:

The applicant should have a M. Sc. degree in silviculture or related forest sciences, biostatistics or a related discipline but with main focus on understanding tree and stand growth and development. Other beneficial qualifications are experience of forestry analytics, using preferably R programming language and/or GIS softwares, and good communications skills with fluency in written English. Drivers license is a necessity for the work duties.
