SLU’s Environmental Monitoring and Assessment program Built Environment announces development aid

SLU's Environmental Monitoring and Assessment (EMA) Program Built Environment, coordinated by the Faculty of Landscape architecture, Horticultural and Plant Production Science (LTV), announces funding for projects aimed at developing methods or computer applications in the environmental analysis where accessibility and long-term/follow-upability is a quality, and/or contributes to requested decision-making documents for the societal stakeholders. The focus of the projects in this call should be either the outdoor environment of children and young people or urban ecosystem services.

Through this call, the Faculty wants to encourage new applications in environmental analysis and increase collaboration, both internally and externally. It is an advantage if the results of the projects granted can lead to future external missions regarding continuous environmental monitoring within the national environmental goals related to the built environment.

The applications will be presented to and discussed with the programme's external reference group with participants from societal stakeholders such as the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, after which the Board for continuous environmental analysis at the LTV Faculty submits a proposal for decision to the Dean. The call process is in itself of great value in that it contributes to a dialogue with the societal stakeholders about the development and direction of SLU's environmental analysis.

The maximum amount per project to apply for is SEK 350,000. The project funding advertised covers SEK 700,000 (corresponding to 2-4 projects) and will be issued as a one-off grant in 2020. However, part of the funds may be available in 2021, if special reasons exist. In case of late or non-delivery, the faculty can withdraw funds.

Preliminary reporting of the projects will take place in December 2020 in SLU's reporting system. In addition to this reporting, the project concludes with a popular scientific publication of the results. Scientific publication of the results is encouraged, but should take place outside the project envelope.

SLU's Environmental Monitoring and Assessment

SLU is the only Swedish university that has the government's mission to conduct continuous environmental analysis. The background to this is the extensive monitoring of natural resources and the environment that has been carried out over a long period of time, the many synergies with research into biological natural resources, and the close link with education, both at basic and advanced level.

The environmental analysis highlights both society's potential to use natural resources sustainably and the environmental impact of this use. Studies and analyses of natural resource use in various actions are natural parts of the activities. In order to produce these data, access is needed to comprehensive environmental data and to scientific expertise with knowledge of current national and international regulations, which analyse the results.

Through cooperation with societal stakeholders, primarily responsible ministries, national and regional authorities but also municipalities and the general public, SLU supports the whole society with a material for the state and development of the environment. In order to promote this collaboration, continuous environmental analysis is organized in programmes related to the national environmental goals and Sweden's international environmental cooperations.
