Futures Lab webinar and discussion with Garry Peterson (Stockholm Resilience Centre) and Susanna Barrineau (SLU).

Garry Peterson will in his presentation Nature Futures discuss different ways people can use futures thinking to improve thinking around people and nature.  Globally recent IPBES assessments have shown that human activity is rapidly unravelling the web of life that supports all human enterprise, and that there is a lack of identified pathways towards futures in which people can achieve the goal of living in “harmony with nature”, that state goal of all the world’s nations.  I will discuss recent efforts to articulate such pathways, the challenges these efforts face, and recent progress as well as relate these challenges to MISTRA Food Futures.

Susanna Barrineau will give a presentation with the title Expanding the possibilities of the present with futures thinking where she will discuss how we can move into futures in open ways that allow for the multiple pathways needed to approach wicked contexts. How can we create moments or processes in research that support this? This presentation introduces two futures-oriented approaches – Causal Layered Analysis and Games for Change. These methods are explored as tools for transformative learning and as ways to “undefine the future” within research. 

This webinar is part of a series, arranged by the Futures Lab at SLU which is a forum for interdisciplinary explorations of future research questions and societal challenges. The main target audiences are SLU researchers, teachers and students, but anyone interested is welcome to join.

Garry Peterson is a professor at Stockholm Resilience Centre, Stockholm University who is part of the team working on Scenarios for MISTRA Food Futures.  He has worked on ecological futures for over twenty years, both working on developing participatory futures to help address local environmental conflicts, and helping develop global scenarios as part of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and as a member of the IPBES Scenarios and models task force.

 

Susanna Barrineau is a PhD researcher at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia in the MISTRA Environmental Communication Programme and an associate at the Department of Urban and Rural Development at SLU. Her project is called Carefully Co-creating Agricultural Futures – exploring relationships and experiences entangled within carbon farming. She has previously worked with interdisciplinary sustainability education where she was introduced to the field of futures thinking and which proceeded to extensively shape her thinking and work.
