Biodiversity and the role of forests in combating climate change are pressing global issues that demand new knowledge. Fifteen PhD positions are now open within a new research program at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), aimed at contributing to sustainable forestry for the future.

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) has launched the Wallenberg Initiatives in Forest Research (WIFORCE), a research program funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, running until 2030. The program’s goal is to advance sustainable forestry and forest conservation to address future environmental and societal challenges.

As part of the program, a research school will be established, hosting over 50 PhD students. Fifteen of these positions are now open for applications.

“SLU is a global leader in forest research, and the PhD students will be supervised by established experts across a range of disciplines. The research will increase our understanding of forest ecosystem processes and functions, as well as how forestry influences and is influenced by these processes,” says Hjalmar Laudon, director of the WIFORCE research school.

The available PhD positions span a wide range of topics, including remote sensing and climate system models, AI-based mapping for peatland forestry, and airborne eDNA. Other research areas include fungal ecology, multilayered mixed forests, riparian forests, carbon balance, herbivores, insects, and methods for assessing biodiversity.

Last date of application is 21 January 2025.
