Basement cultivation for residents in Rosengård

Residents are transforming the empty basements of Sweden's "Million Program" housing into flourishing garden plots in a new initiative by SLU. The project "From Basement to Kitchen" aims to strengthen Sweden's preparedness by increasing local food production while also developing the area.

SLU, the Form/Design Center, and the Botildenborg Foundation are now collaborating to create a new project where residents in Rosengård will grow their own food in unused basement spaces.

— There are underutilized basement spaces in Sweden, particularly in Million Program areas. At the same time, we need to develop new ways to produce food to contribute to self-sufficiency and preparedness, says project leader Nina Vogel at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
