Sara Lysholm

Sara Lysholm
Veterinarian and post-doctoral researcher at the Institution of Clinical Sciences at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). Primarily working with infectious diseases in ruminants in Africa.

Presentation

My main research area is infectious diseases in ruminants in Africa. I am employed at SLU as a post-doctoral researcher but I am based at ILRI in Nairobi, Kenya. I graduated from veterinary school in January 2017 and defended my PhD thesis in December 2021.

Teaching

I teach sheep handling and small ruminant diseases to veterinary students in Sweden who are in their final years of education. I also supervise students writing their MSc and BSc theses in both Sweden and Kenya.

Research

The aim of my research project is to estimate the combined societal burden of diseases that infect both humans and animals (i.e. zoonotic diseases) in Kenya. The project is financed by an International Postdoc grant from the Swedish Research Council. I am also the project leader of a vaccination project in northern Zambia, where we regularly vaccinate village poultry for newcastle disease, and dogs for rabies. I have previous experience from conducting sero-epidemiological studies focusing on small ruminant diseases in Zambia, Tanzania and Botswana, and from qualitative interview studies in Zambia.

Cooperation

I collaborate with researchers at ILRI in Nairobi, Kenya and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, as well as the University of Liverpool and the University of Zambia.
