Presentation
Hi,
My name is Adrien Kroese (he/him) and I study how cows mooove 🐄
I graduated in engineering from ISARA-Lyon (France) and with an MSc in Organic Agriculture from Wageningen university (Netherlands). After working in the sugar cane industry, analysing satelite images to optimise the timing of crop interventions, I started studying for a PhD at SLU using computer vision to monitor cow welfare.
Languages: English, French, Portuguese & Swedish
Research
How can we improve dairy cow welfare with computer vision?
This is the question central to my research. As herds get larger, the risk increases that health and welfare issues go unnoticed. Welfare assessment of animals can difficultly be performed continuously by assessors.
My research, in collboration with Sony Nordic aims at adressing this gap by developping multi-sensor tools to monitor the behaviour and comfort indicators of dairy cows. More specifically, I interpret data from pose estimation in 3D to monitor indicators of comfort in cubicles and around resting... as well as trying to find new opportunities for more continuous monitoring. For example, behavioural signs of positive welfare states remain ambiguous. My hope is that such technology can help generate data to better understand the behaviours that cows display in barns.
