Man standing in the forest

Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre is pleased to invite you to an upcoming seminar by Maksym Matsala, postdoctoral researcher at our department, on the topic: "Are Forests Doomed in War-Impacted Southern and Eastern Ukraine?"

About the presentation:

Southern and Eastern Ukraine's forests have a unique history. Planted during tsarist and Soviet times, these ecosystems emerged in regions that had not seen trees for millennia. Long before the Russian invasion in 2022, these forests were already facing significant challenges from human impact and climate change. Now, the question is whether the ongoing conflict will deliver the final blow, potentially reverting these areas back to vast, forestless steppes.

Matsala’s presentation will delve into the history of these forests and explore how remote sensing data is being used to track their past, present, and future. By linking historical and modern data, he aims to shed light on the resilience and vulnerability of these ecosystems in the face of war and environmental changes.
