PhD course: Ecophysiological concepts and applications in managed forests

PhD students from SLU and other universities in Sweden and abroad are welcome to join this PhD course in Forest ecophysiology.

Course description

Ecophysiology is the study of element fluxes between organisms and the surrounding environment. By connecting measurements at cell, individual leaf or root scale to entire canopy and ecosystem functioning, the approach can provide mechanistic understanding of forest responses to changing conditions (such as climate change or management practices).

During the course, students will learn to apply ecophysiological principles and methods to a range of topics related to forest growth.

The first part of the course can be attended remotely, and during the final part we will all meet in beautiful Västerbotten. Indoor classes led by prominent experts will be complemented by outdoor exercises and visits to several scientific field sites.

Practicalities

Except for the field period (ca 2 weeks in northern Sweden), the course can be attended remotely, and we will strive to accommodate time zone differences for the remote seminars.

All students need to arrange their own travel to Umeå for the field period. Transportation from Umeå to the excursion sites will be arranged by the course.

How to register

Applications or questions can be emailed to Nils Henriksson, nils.henriksson@slu.se

The application should, besides name, department and major professor, shortly describe your thesis project and a motivation why you are interested in the course.
