8/5 2025: Navigating the data flow – how to make environmental monitoring data openly available

Suggestions for webinars

Is there something in environmental data management that you would like to know more about? Or do you have knowledge that you would like to share with your SLU colleagues? Did you miss any of the previous webinars and would like a repeat? Send an email to miljodatastod@slu.se, we welcome suggestions for topics for future webinars.

Previous webinars

Here are some examples of webinars from recent years. Please contact us if you are interested in presentations or other material from any of the webinars.

Seminars and workshops on data management are also organized by Data Management Support, a unit at the SLU University Library that offers support on all aspects of management of data from research and environmental assessment.

How to find and use SLU’s environmental monitoring and assessment data

This webinar gave an introduction to how to find all SLU environmental monitroing and assessment data. Two examples of how to proceed and download data were shown.

First, it was demonstrated how to search and browse SLU's environmental data catalogue, a website that collects descriptions of open data from SLU's environmental monitoring and assessment. Then the SLU Swedish Species Information Centre showed how to use Artportalen (The Swedish Species Observation System), and the National Forest Data Lab showed how to find and download different map layers.

The webinar was held on 2024-12-03.

How to publish environmental data via Swedish National Data Service (SND)

The SND catalogue is a national repository for data where all disciplines are welcome. In the webinar we went through how the SND catalogue can be used to publish environmental analysis data.

Among other things, we addressed:

  • why to make data available
  • in which situations the SND catalogue is a good option and when it is not
  • examples of SLU data in the SND catalogue
  • how to describe and upload data to the catalogue
  • what to consider before publishing data in the SND catalogue
  • what the FAIR principles mean and how the SND catalogue helps to comply with them
  • what support is available within SLU.

The webinar was not recorded. If you would like the presentation, please email miljodatastod@slu.se.

Applications and other digital tools in environmental monitoring fieldwork

Terms such as apps and field computers are commonly used in field word. Whatever the term, it refers to software, systems or tools for digitally recording data in the field.

During this webinar, the following examples of tools used at SLU were shown:

  • Kreg – used for coastal fishery
  • E-reg – a platform for data collection in marine environmental monitoring
  • Fieldpad – easily configurable field data app
  • Spöreg – an app for angler data collection.

The webinar was held on 2024-05-22.

Visualise environmental analysis data with Storymaps

ArcGIS Storymaps is a tool that can be used to visualise data and create maps for the web. At the webinar, three people from SLU talked about the maps they created with Storymaps and how they did it.

Here are a example of a Storymap (in Swedish):

ESRI provides the GIS programme ArcGIS and the tool StoryMaps. SLUI's GIS support can activate your SLU account with ESRI

How to create data descriptions in SLU's environmental data catalogue

The webinar demonstrated the SLU environmental data catalogue and how to create data descriptions.
