Background and goals for quality assurance of education

Last changed: 24 October 2023

Since January 2017, Sweden's higher education institutions, in collaboration with the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ), share the responsibility for ensuring the quality of higher education.

This means that each higher education institution develops and implements a quality assurance system for its own programs, while UKÄ, among other things, reviews the quality assurance system and conducts educational evaluations.

Quality assurance at SLU

Our quality assurance system is built on a systematic and regularly recurring review of all education through current state analyses and quality dialogues.

The current state analysis is conducted by the respective doctoral program or program board, while the quality dialogues take place between the education manager at the university level (Vice-Chancellor responsible for doctoral education/education board) and the respective doctoral program or program board.

Goals of Quality Assurance

The foundation of SLU's quality assurance system can be summarized as follows:

  1. SLU aims to have high-quality education. A necessary condition for this is that the educational process is of high quality.

  2. SLU's definitions of what constitutes good quality in the educational process are based on national and international agreements, as well as legal requirements. These definitions (quality standards) are based on the university's strategic goals, values, guidelines, regulations, and education policies.

  3. Through systematic quality assurance, it is ensured that all aspects of the educational process meet the quality specified in the quality standards.

  4. Quality assurance promotes a culture where the shared quality standards serve as the foundation for both the work of delivering education and the development of support and governance systems.
