Klara Fischer on why "technology is not scale-neutral" in new Feed podcast

Published: 21 June 2021

Why do smallholders in sub-Saharan Africa adopt, adapt and reject different technologies? The latest episode of the podcast Feed, produced by the discussion initiative Table, discusses this with Klara Fischer, associate professor in rural development at the Department of Urban and Rural Development.

Feed is a food systems podcast that seeks to explore the evidence, worldviews, and values that people bring to global food system debates. The podcast is produced by Table, a collaboration between SLU, the University of Oxford and Wageningen University & Research.

The latest episode of Feed has invited Klara Fischer (associate professor in rural development at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences) to discuss how different smallholders in sub-Saharan Africa adopt and adapt different technologies, why new crop technologies are not scale-neutral, lessons to be learned from the Asian green revolution, and why it's important to work in interdisciplinary teams and be aware of the boundaries of our own knowledge.

Her research interests concern how ideas and practices regarding today's sustainability challenges in food production and natural resource management are negotiated and turned into practice, and in particular how marginalised groups are affected.
