Updated environmental objectives for SLU courses and programmes

Educating students in sustainability is a top priority. By giving the next generation of decision makers the tools and understanding they need to address the complexity of sustainability, SLU can make a huge difference.

2017 saw the introduction of the overarching objective: all students on SLU degree programmes are to be provided with a solid foundation for managing all perspectives (financial, social, environmental) of sustainability in their future professional life. To meet this objective, several interim targets have been set within the regular environmental management work. The overarching environmental objective is the same, however the interim targets have been updated.

The interim targets are as follows:

  • Integrate sustainable development to all programmes (100%) by 2025.
  • By 2025, course evaluation reports should score an average of at least 3.5 (of a possible 5.0) in response to questions regarding the extent to which sustainability has been integrated into education.
  • At least 70% of alumni agree that their programme has given them the tools to work with all three aspects of sustainable development in their current professional life, and that they feel they use these tools and contribute to a more sustainable world.

“This is one more step to be implemented in SLU’s new strategy. One of the focus areas is SLU’s next steps for sustainable development, and by creating greater clarity in our programmes, we hope to give the decision makers of the future the best tools for tackling complex issues,” says Deputy Vice-Chancellor Karin Holmgren.

During the 2020/2021 winter, SLU has taken decisions to adapt our organisation in five areas, including updated environmental objectives for education, environmental monitoring and assessment, emissions generated by business travel, energy production and savings and guidelines for food purchases.
