Measures to reduce the spread of Covid-19 in student environments
Published: 14 August 2020
To enable social distancing and ensure smooth logistics in pool teaching rooms and shared spaces on campus, several measures have been taken. The Service Unit is responsible for these spaces at SLU’s main sites. For other sites, the local facilities management office is responsible. All preparations must be concluded by the start of the 2020 autumn semester.
August 26 update
Furniture in classrooms
Regardless of how the furniture in a room is arranged, the teacher/lecturer is responsible for encouraging participants to respect the recommended physical distance when choosing a seat. Information on this will be sent out by email and posted on the web.
The maximum number of people in a teaching room, taking into account the necessary distancing, has been calculated and is available on the staff web.
In rooms where this is possible, some chairs will be removed and tables will be separated for physical distancing. If needed, the first row will be removed or closed off to increase the distance between students and the teacher/lecturer.
In lecture theatres and larger rooms with tiered seating, the rows that must not be used will be closed off. Some seats will be left empty, allowing students to seat themselves at a suitable distance from each other. To close off rows, the existing chains or coloured tape will be used.
Student kitchens
Most microwaves are fixed installations and must not be moved.
Tables will be separated to increase distance. Wherever possible, the number of tables with seating close to student kitchens will be increased.
Students will be encouraged to bring cold food to minimise crowding in kitchens.
Hand sanitiser stations
Stable and movable floor stands with hand sanitiser will be placed close to entrances, student kitchens and some shared spaces frequented by student and visitors. Cleaning services will take care of topping up sanitiser and ordering new when needed.
Disinfectant and paper towels will be available in or close to computer rooms; in addition to the regular disinfection carried out by cleaning services, students can also wipe down keyboards themselves.
Signage
Footprint stickers will be placed on floors in areas where queues often form.
Coloured blocking tape will be used to close off rows not to be used in lecture theatres and rooms with tiered seating.
There will be signs, produced by SLU, encouraging people to maintain physical distance. These will be placed on noticeboards, floor signs, outside some group activity rooms, in student kitchens and other suitable places.
We have also produced our own beach flags. All main sites will be provided with 1 or 2 flags to be placed outside the main entrance or in another suitable location.
If digital information screens are available, they will be used to encourage students and staff to maintain physical distance.
Main entrances and doors to some bigger rooms will be fitted with laminated “IN” and “OUT” signs to ensure smooth flows in areas with a lot of people. The Service Unit will provide signs and mount them in consultation with the service organisation for the building in question.
All text on signs is in English only.
Protective screens
Protective screens, format 95x90 cm, have been ordered for the main sites. These will be used in the service centres and other similar staffed receptions areas.
The exam services team have their own protective screens to use when students are registered entering and leaving examination halls.
Some extra screens will be available to borrow for those who need one on the odd occasion and for a limited time, e.g. for events and examinations not handled by the exam services team. To book a screen, contact your local service centre.
Masks
SLU follows the guidelines from the Public Health Authority regarding masks. Anyone who wishes to use a mask must buy one themselves.
Facilities management offices and sites with teaching
The building managers at the Biocentre, the MVM and the Ecology Centre have been informed about the planned measures. The facilities management offices are responsible for any adaptations needed elsewhere than teaching rooms and shared student spaces.
Skinnskatteberg has been informed about the measures taken at the main sites and will implement similar measures locally.
Information on where to obtain SLU signs encouraging physical distance will be available shortly.
Start of the semester:
Read more about the preparations for roll-call day on 31 August on the staff web.
Encourage the students to leave the campus area after roll-call
Encourage the students to avoid public transportations if possible
AD accounts and access cards
This year, new students with Swedish social security number can sign for their user accounts digitally at the start of the semester. This is to avoid long queues at the IT service desk.
Access cards will be handed out by the service centre as usual. Preparations are also underway to ensure a smooth queueing system. There will be a maximum number of people allowed in the lobby at any one time. If this number is exceeded, staff will ask students to come back at a later time.
