SGI gives 3.8 million SEK to a project about soil and groundwater remediation of PFASs through plants (PhytoRem). Lutz Ahrens, Associated Professor at the department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment is main applicant of the project.
The technique phytoremediation takes advantage of the ability of plants to concentrate compounds from the environment. It is being used to clean up contaminants (e.g. metals, pesticides, solvents) in projects worldwide. Lutz Ahrens from the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment and colleagues from Örebro University and Tyréns have been granted 3.8 million SEK to investigate how plants can be used to clean up soils and groundwater from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs).
The project is financed by Swedish Geotechnical Institute (SGI) through their Tuffo program about contaminated areas. PhytoRem is one of the three project that has been granted in the 2017 Tuffo call.
