Checklist in the event of an accident or emergency

Last changed: 03 July 2024

Ring 112 in the event of an emergency requiring an ambulance, the police or fire and rescue services.

In the event of an accident or emergency, the most important thing is that anyone who is injured receives help. If emergency assistance is needed, ring 112 (ambulance, the police, or fire and rescue services). When talking to the 112 operator, provide as much information as possible to ensure the right resources are dispatched.

We suggest downloading the SOS Alarm 112 app from the App Store (iPhone users) or Google Play (Android users). Contacting 112 via the app automatically sends your GPS coordinates to the operator.

Here is a checklist of key actions to take in the event of an emergency or accident:

1. Obtain an overview of the situation

  • What has happened?
  • Where did it happen?
  • Are there any casualties?
  • Can assistance be provided, such as first aid?
  • Is anyone still in the area where the incident took place?

2. Call 112 and facilitate any rescue efforts

  • If possible, use the 112 app with location services. If the incident occurred indoors, state the street address.
  • Be prepared to follow instructions from the operator. LISTEN to them – they will help you.
  • If the situation is life threatening or time critical, two operators will handle your call. One will ask you questions while the other listens in and dispatches the emergency services.
  • Be there to meet the emergency services when they arrive and show them where the help is needed.
  • If possible, prepare for their arrival by unlocking doors, making space, etc.

3. Inform others about the incident

  • Your line manager or other supervisor, Security Unit or security coordinator on campus.
  • The Division of Communication for assessment and help distributing information.
  • Affected colleagues, staff and students (as far as possible).
  • The relevant department or faculty management.
  • Students can contact the Sluss crisis hotline on 020-67 68 00

4. If the accident or emergency involves environmentally hazardous emissions

  • Alert the emergency services via 112.
  • Contact the municipal environmental office.
  • Contact the Environmental Unit.
