Studium Generale: Why do you feel that way?

Published: 19 August 2025

In an age of quick answers and categorical opinions, reflection can be seen as an act of resistance. This autumn, SLU is therefore launching Studium Generale, a series of lunchtime meetings where participants are invited to reflect together with others on issues that concern us all. Each event will begin with an exciting guest speaker who will share their thoughts on everything from culture and sustainability, human rights and the role of research in society to the impact of technology on our everyday lives and future.

Be there from the start!

Studium Generale will be held on four occasions during the autumn, starting on 23 September. After the inauguration by the Vice-Chancellor, philosopher Jonna Bornemark will open the series with a talk on reason and emotion. Read more about the first event here:

Come and try out your ideas, think together and challenge yourself. More events will be added to the calendar – keep an eye out! Here you will find the library's upcoming events:

Studium Generale as a democratic project

A lack of reflection can have disastrous consequences, as universities across Europe realised after the Second World War. It came as a shock that academics had regularly passed on information to the Nazis without considering the consequences. To broaden perspectives, universities across Europe created forums to discuss ethics, responsibility and larger cultural issues.

At SLU, we are now continuing this tradition and creating a context where students and staff can meet people with different experiences, exchange ideas and see the world from new angles.
