The work to begin the comprehensive rebuild and refurbishment of the Library Building will begin in late 2024/early 2025. The aim is to create a modern and attractive meeting place for students and staff. Work is set to be completed by the end of 2026.
The existing building was opened in the mid-1970s and it has undergone simple refurbishments over the years. However, the building no longer meets the university’s needs – it does not provide an inspirational work environment, nor can the premises be used efficiently. However, there are more reasons why the building is undergoing comprehensive renovations.
Jonas Linder, Project Leader at SLU explains, ‘The early 2000s saw several new premises being built along Ulls väg, which increased campus density. This has resulted in the library losing its function as a meeting point and natural campus hub. We have also seen a decrease in the number of physical library loans, which in turn requires fewer stacks. Now, more people expect university libraries to offer inspiring environments where students, researchers and other staff can meet up and interact.’
Towards the end of 2024, the library will begin the relocation process. This will see the library and its activities moving into temporary premises. Investigation is underway regarding the location on campus.
The following will also be affected by the rebuild:
