New guidelines for the language at SLU Aqua

Published: 12 March 2024

Check out our new guidelines for how we use English in our internal communication. The purpose of the guidelines is for everyone to feel included and involved - regardless of whether you speak Swedish or English.

SLU is a Swedish-speaking university, but we also need English as a working language to include employees, PhD students and students who do not have Swedish as their native or first language. We also need English as a working language in order to strengthen our international competitiveness.

The guidelines are based on SLU's overall language policy and language guidelines and should be seen as a complement.

Examples of information that needs to be translated into English

  • Information aimed at everyone at SLU Aqua: for example, our pages here on the staff web, letters from the head of department, e-mails to everyone at SLU Aqua and internal governing documents.
  • Meeting notes, agendas and minutes from management team meetings, division meetings, the department council (IR) and more.

This applies to meetings

  • Joint meetings for the entire department, such as department meetings or digital meetings such as "coffee with the management", can be held in both Swedish and English.
  • Division meetings can be held in both Swedish and English. The recommendation is to get a variety.

As a complement, PPT-presentations and other information can be in English if the presentation is in Swedish and vice versa. We strive to create good conditions for participation and inclusion, regardless of whether you speak Swedish or English. It is always okay to ask a question in Swedish or English.

Translation tools

We primarily use the translation tool available in Microsoft Word. Watch a short instructional video below. Another great tool for translating words and simple sentences is the DeepL.com website.

It is also permitted to use other services for translation, as long as the translation is of good quality.
