The NJ faculty’s program on Global Development aims to increase the Faculty staff's capacity to successfully compete for external funds within the context of Global Development. Funding from the yearly call enable researchers to establish new networks in countries outside Sweden. Applicants should have an appointment at the NJ-faculty during full duration of the planned activities either as scientists, environmental specialist or PhD students. The maximum sum allocated to a successful application is 90 000 SEK. The program does not cover costs for hosts or partners in Global Development countries. The current call is aimed at projects starting during 2022 or 2023. Proposals will be evaluated by the Committee of Global Affairs. Final decisions about funding are made by the Dean of the NJ faculty.
Early career scientists and environmental specialists, as well as PhD-students in the latter part of their education (i.e. after half-time seminar) at the NJ-faculty are invited to submit proposals. The proposals must be for activities aimed at building networks within the context of Global Development. The activities can include visits to other countries. Both visits and network-building activities should be clearly linked to potential future Global Development-related initiatives or applications of relevance for research and/or education at the NJ faculty. Funding will only be given to activities that include countries listed on the DAC list of ODA recipients, with priority given to applications for working in “least developed countries”, “other low income countries” or “lower middle income countries and territories” (see link below).
Projects or networking activities must be carried out and reported within a year from the date of funding approval. As part of the report, successful applicants will be required to draft a short, web-based, summary of their work including pictures. The proposals should be written with a clear ambition to expand the applicant’s competence and network within the field of GD research. For PhD-students it is important to show that senior collaborators will host the student when abroad.
The following criteria will be used when assessing the applications:
• General fit to the call
• Feasibility of the activities
• Safety aspects of traveling to and residing in countries in the application (e.g. with respect to local conflicts and the ongoing pandemic).
In the evaluation early career researchers that have recently finished their PhD will be given the highest priority, followed by PhD students, and more experienced researchers. Gender mainstreaming will be applied.
The proposal to the NJ Committee of Global Affairs should include:
1. The SLU ID the proposal is intended for, i.e. SLU.ua.2022.4.1-405.
2. Name, title, year of dissertation/PhD, current position and contact details of the applicant.
a. For projects, a plan must include: title of the proposal, a short description of the project including how the applicant will be involved, the applicant’s contribution to the expertise of the project, and which future applications/projects (or other spin-off(s)) are anticipated. If there are plans for external calls following the work, information on these should be included.
b. For networking activities, a plan must include: title of the proposal, a short description of the network to be established, researchers and universities/organizations that will be visited, how the applicant will be involved in the network, the applicant’s contribution to the expertise of the network, and a description of applications/projects (or other spin-off(s)). If there are plans for external calls following the work, information on these should be included.
3. A description of how this grant will contribute to establish or improve the applicant’s platform within a new Global Development-related research field.
4. Two letters of support should be submitted with each proposal: (1) a letter of support from the nearest group leader that outlines the role of the applicant in the proposed activities, and (2) a letter of invitation from the host organization describing their commitment to the activities. 5. A detailed budget covering travel plans, accommodation, and if applicable any additional direct costs related to the visit. addressing aspects of safe travel during the pandemic.
6. A time-table for the activities planned.
7. CV of the candidate (max 2 pages).
8. List of publications of the candidate (max 2 pages).
9. The application should be approved by head of department (or equivalent).
A maximum of three pages may be used for item b and c in the list above. Note that the grant does not cover costs for meetings or travel to groups in Sweden or any costs for hosts.
Proposals labeled SLU ua 2022.4.1-405 should be submitted no later than 6 May 2022 to registrator@slu.se, with a copy to Kristine.koch@slu.se.
