The Department of Animal Environment and Health was recently granted 600.000 SEK from Sparbanksstiftelsen Skaraborg for establishing a meat quality laboratory at SLU in Skara.

This is an important milestone for the department as one of the research areas focus on meat science, and as the Faculty just few years ago decided to support a professorship on the topic. At the departments’ research station "SLU Götala beef and lamb meat research", a large part of the research projects includes studies on meat quality, so now getting our own meat laboratory facility, means that we finally can make a large part of the analytical work ourselves and do not have to buy this service externally. This facility also makes us an attractive collaborative partner as we can offer further contributions in research projects and, not the least, be able to also offer our students an opportunity to work with meat quality-related projects. In the long run, we will be able to perform analyses on all types of meat, i.e. in addition to farm animals, also game, rabbit and fish. The department is therefore most grateful to having received this support for a meat quality laboratory.
