Here is a travel letter from the USA. I am experiencing the presidential election campaign a bit closer than I needed. It is strange enough followed from home! But I will return home with a lot of new insights from Veterinary Cancer Society’s annual meeting, where I also chair an international expert committee on mammary tumors in dogs.
Henrik Rönnberg, Professor and Deputy Dean,
Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal ScienceSpeaking of Americans: I had the pleasure to meet our honor doctorate Glen Broderick, professor from UW at the promotion October 8th. He has spent his entire life in optimizing the protein feed for dairy cows. This to not overfeed with protein and thus reducing costs and create sustainable diary production.
I also met our second honor doctorate, colleague Lillemor Wodmar who is the general secretary of the Swedish animal protection society. In her lecture she described the history of the Swedish animal protection act from late 1800 until today and also the impact it has had on international animal protection legislation. Not only is Lillemor very competent, but also a great ambassador for SLU! We made perfect choices this year! We just must make sure that we have more that comes to hear the lectures next year.
I also want to give our sister faculty NJ a gold star for their choices of honour doctorates. Here we got to learn everything from how to paint nature and simultaneously preserve endangered biotopes, to the life of honey bees and how plants deal with the trade-off of growth and immune system. I also must mention my amazing former teacher Ingvar Ekesbo that became docor jubilaris and held a fantastic speech at the ceremony.
Also I like to mention the pedagogic price winner Emma Eriksson that has developed new teaching material for food safety at slaughter houses. We also congratulates Rebecka Westin and her research on optimizing animal welfare for pigs.
In the typical sound of police sires that always comes out at night in any bigger American city I will be sleeping tight, thinking about our newly promoted doctors at SLU. Not all will stay. But for those who will and may, we need to create a good environment to support career building and research development. Something to pin point I the new strategy, soon ready to be launched.
By the way, I like the USA but I love Sweden. That is what they call east or west, home is best.
