Management Team Development

A Management Team Can Exist at Many Levels and Serve Various Functions

It is common for a management team to bring together several individuals in leadership positions to collectively govern and lead an organization, fostering collaboration and efficiency. Successful management teams are characterized by regularly turning their focus inward to develop and evaluate their own work in order to maintain effectiveness and strong relationships.

An initiative to develop the management team is often a worthwhile investment for a well-functioning organization. To achieve real and sustainable change within an organization, it is crucial that everyone moves in the same direction and that different management levels collaborate and act in alignment with agreed-upon visions, decisions, and values. A management team that addresses the right issues, at the right time, and in the right way can play a critical role in the success of the organization. In addition, the management team can serve as a strong source of support and inspiration for its member managers.

Management Team Development Is Based on the Organization’s Mission and Needs

Management team development is always tailored to the organization’s mission and current needs, and therefore may vary in terms of content and duration. Discussions about the purpose, structure, content, etc., must be held in connection with each management team. Sometimes, it may also be appropriate to conduct individual assessments with all members before the initiative begins.

Management Team Development Typically Addresses the Following Questions:

  • What is a management team? What is the purpose of our management team? Why do we exist and who do we serve? What types of issues should we address (and not!) and how do we make decisions?

  • How should we work in order to feel successful and be appreciated? What does the role of a management team member entail? What expectations do we have of one another, both during and outside of meetings? How should we communicate and collaborate?*

  • How should we work during meetings? Who leads the meetings? How often and how long should our meetings be? How do we use the agenda? How do we prepare for and follow up after meetings? How do we handle documentation and external communication?
