Ellen Law

Ellen Law
Ellen works as a radiologist at the Diagnostic Imaging Unit at the University Animal Hospital and combines work in the clinic with clinical research. Her speciality is ultrasound and tendon and ligament injuries in horses. She also teaches veterinary students, trainees in the European Specialist Training for Radiologists (ECVDI) and holds continuing education courses in diagnostic imaging for veterinarians.

Presentation

Ellen is working on her doctoral thesis on equine patellar ligament injuries and how best to diagnose them. Human athletes can suffer from something called ‘jumper's knee’ and the aim of Ellen's research is to investigate whether a similar condition exists in horses with chronic pain from the patellar ligaments and neighbouring structures. Her driving force is to increase the knowledge of orthopaedic suffering and imaging in horses in order to make more accurate diagnoses and in the long run increase horse welfare.

Teaching

Ellen teaches both veterinary students in equine radiography, clinical rotations at the Diagnostic Imaging Unit at UDS, and supervises trainees in the European Specialist Training for Radiologists (ECVDI). She also frequently gives courses in automotive diagnostics for veterinarians.

Research

Ellen currently works as part of Marie Rhodin's team researching equine biomechanics and movement analysis.

Background

Ellen worked for 10 years as an equine veterinarian at Specialisthästsjukhuset in Helsingborg, among other places, before deciding to specialise in diagnostic imaging. Her interest in research has always been there and she now feels fortunate to work with research and teaching on a daily basis.
