Implementation Network 2.0 – Priority of location for Network 2.0
The rollout and activation of the new network have begun. The sites where the new network has been activated so far are:
• Öregrund
• Simpevarp
• Väröbacka
• Drottningholm
• Lysekil
• Asa
• Siljansfors
• Mora
• Tönnersjöheden
In Ultuna, the following buildings have had the new network activated:
• Ulls Hus (WiFi only)
• EKC (WiFi only)
• MVM (WiFi only)
• BIOC (WiFi only)
• Ullbo
• Inspektorn
• Logen
• Ulls Restaurang
• Virkeslära
• Teknikhuset
Please note that most sites will receive both Wi-Fi and a wired network simultaneously. However, in Umeå and Ultuna, Wi-Fi will be activated first, while the wired network will follow later. The difference is due to technical conditions regarding how these locations are connected to the internet. In Ultuna, the smaller buildings have also had the wired network activated.
When do I get access to Network 2.0?
The project will continuously prioritize locations to adapt and maximize the rollout speed. Information will be sent out before each activation so that users are well-prepared for the new network.
Important about Wi-Fi usage
We encourage all users to primarily use Wi-Fi instead of the wired network. A wired network connects computers and other devices using cables. Think of it like using a phone with a cord; the cables allow devices to communicate with each other and share the internet.
In some cases, the network cable is plugged directly into the computer, but more commonly, it is connected to a dock that your computer connects to. Installing an extensive wired network in buildings entails high costs. By transitioning to Wi-Fi for as many devices as possible (e.g., laptops), we reduce the need for expensive investments in additional equipment. Moreover, we free up cable slots in network equipment for operations that have a greater need for wired connections, such as Exam Services, complex lab equipment, and devices handling large amounts of data.
The new Wi-Fi network offers better performance than the current one – and no more cords!

IT security-enhancing work is underway as part of the IT Infrastructure Upgrade Program, with several projects focusing on IT security measures.

The ITAM (IT Asset Management) Implementation project is the next step in SLU’s efforts to establish a more secure, efficient, and systematic management of the university’s IT assets. Building on the work completed in the ITAM Planning and Design project, the focus now shifts to concrete implementation.
The goal is to ensure that all IT assets managed by the IT department are identified, documented, and controlled throughout their entire lifecycle.
This creates improved conditions for:
• Enhanced IT security and risk management
• More efficient use and optimization of IT resources
• Better compliance with laws and regulations
• Clearer and more consistent processes and responsibilities
• Structured method support for long-term governance
Throughout the project, processes, roles, and tools will be documented and further developed. In addition, an initial framework will be implemented for managing IT assets across four key domains: network, AV, server, and client.

SLU continues to strengthen its identity and access management by advancing to the next phase in the IAM stream: the implementation of multifactor authentication (MFA). The project aims to enhance login security for SLU’s systems in response to increasing external requirements and an evolving threat landscape.
MFA provides users with an additional layer of protection beyond passwords, reducing the risk of unauthorized access.
The focus is on safeguarding sensitive systems and users with elevated privileges, while establishing clear procedures for access.
This is a key part of SLU’s efforts to ensure that the right individuals have the right access at the right time – securely.

A fundamental security requirement at SLU is the digital identity of each employee, student, and organization's operation. It is connected to login, email, and permissions. In 2023 and the spring of 2024, SLU's current identity platform, IDIS, was subject to competitive procurement.
During the fall of 2024 and into 2025, an implementation project will take place where the new identity platform, Omada, will be implemented. In addition to replacing the functionality of IDIS, IGA will also manage permissions, governance, and self-service.

Time period: December 2024 – December 2025
The project aims to establish a common foundation for how SLU’s IT systems should be developed and managed in a secure and compliant way. With clear guidelines, policies, and tools, the organization gains better conditions for managing systems in a consistent and sustainable manner.
The work includes:
• Documentation of legal requirements and processes
• Development of training materials
• Further development of the Minerva tool
• Identification of improvement areas in system management

SLU has conducted an analysis of the potential to migrate its current Microsoft solutions to cloud-based services in M365. The analysis highlights several potential benefits, including improved security and accessibility. A business case is now being developed to support a decision on a possible migration.

To reduce dependency on individuals and create a more consistent IT environment, SLU is implementing Nutanix Database Service (NDB) and Kubernetes Platform (NKP). By replacing older, in-house solutions with Nutanix platforms, operations become more streamlined, vulnerabilities are reduced, and management becomes more efficient.
The new platform enables automated management of databases and containers, resulting in better control, increased stability, and more time to support the organization.
