Implementation Network 2.0 – Priority of location for Network 2.0

A preliminary prioritization of locations that will receive Network 2.0 has been made, it is based on the status of the current network and the low complexity of the rollout. The first locations to receive Network 2.0 is.

  • Öregrund
  • Drottningholm
  • Simpevarp
  • Väröbacka
  • Lysekil
  • Ultuna (priority of Wi-Fi)

Please note that most locations will receive both Wi-Fi and a wired network simultaneously. However, in Umeå and Ultuna, Wi-Fi will be activated first, while the wired network will follow later. The difference is due to technical conditions regarding how these locations are connected to the internet.

When do I get access to Network 2.0?

The project will continuously prioritize locations to adapt and maximize the rollout speed. Information will be sent out before each activation so that users are well-prepared for the new network.

Important about Wi-Fi usage

We encourage all users to primarily use Wi-Fi instead of the wired network. A wired network connects computers and other devices using cables. Think of it like using a phone with a cord; the cables allow devices to communicate with each other and share the internet.

In some cases, the network cable is plugged directly into the computer, but more commonly, it is connected to a dock that your computer connects to. Installing an extensive wired network in buildings entails high costs. By transitioning to Wi-Fi for as many devices as possible (e.g., laptops), we reduce the need for expensive investments in additional equipment. Moreover, we free up cable slots in network equipment for operations that have a greater need for wired connections, such as Exam Services, complex lab equipment, and devices handling large amounts of data.

The new Wi-Fi network offers better performance than the current one – and no more cords!

Implementation Security Measures

Project manager: Several, contact the project owner in case of questions

Project owner: Matts Djos

Time period: January 2024 –

IT security-enhancing work is underway as part of the IT Infrastructure Upgrade Program, with several projects focusing on IT security measures. For more information, please contact the project owner Matts Djos (matts.djos@slu.se).

ITAM Planning and Design (part of Implementation Security Measures)

Project owner: Matts Djos

Time period: February 2024 – November 2024

ITAM Planning and Design is a project within the framework of the program’s implementation of security measures. IT Asset Management (ITAM) is a best practice for systematically managing, maintaining, and making data about an organization’s IT assets available throughout their lifecycle, from cradle to grave. The project is a first step to address the current management and control of SLU:s IT assets. In the project, responsibilities and accountability will be defined, processes will be identified and designed, and tools and architecture will be evaluated. In addition, plans for following implementations will be made.

Implementation of Identity Management - IAM

Project manager: Karl Jungward

Project owner: Matts Djos

Time period: January 2024 –

Identity management is often abbreviated as IAM (Identity and Access Management). The project is focused on improving security at SLU by developing and enhancing the management of digital identities and their accesses. The overall goal is to implement a new identity management architecture for the organization to ensure that the right individuals have access to the right resources at the right time and for the right reasons.

IDIS 2.0-project

Project manager: Karl Jungward

Project owner: Matts Djos

Time period: September 2024 –

A fundamental security requirement at SLU is the digital identity of each employee, student, and organization's operation. It is connected to login, email, and permissions. In 2023 and the spring of 2024, SLU's current identity platform, IDIS, was subject to competitive procurement. During the fall of 2024 and into 2025, an implementation project will take place where the new identity platform, Omada, will be implemented. In addition to replacing the functionality of IDIS, IGA will also manage permissions, governance, and self-service.

Upgrading MVM Data Centre

Project manager: Carl-August Gustén

Project owner: Henrik Hedlund

Time period: May 2024 – October 2024

The project aims to:

  • Upgrade cooling and power over UPS in the MVM data centre to have the capacity to adequately handle existing and planned loads.
  • In the short term, the initiative is about ensuring capacity for 2024 given known load requirements and providing space for additional unplanned loads that may arise.
