New slu.se is now live

Published: 17 June 2025

After nearly a year and a half of hard work, the new slu.se has been launched today – and with it, SLU Aqua also gets a brand-new departmental website. This has been a thorough effort where the entire slu.se has been rebuilt from the ground up. The code has been rewritten, and all content has been recreated on the new platform – all to ensure the highest possible quality.

A brief background on SLU Aqua’s web project

During autumn 2024 and spring 2025, we’ve been working on developing a brand-new website for SLU Aqua. The team behind the scenes – Josefine Karlsson, Sofia Bureborn, and Teresa Soler – started by diving deep into the old site: What works? What’s missing? What could be made clearer or simpler?

We’ve reviewed, rewritten, removed, and added content – all while having many great and insightful conversations with colleagues across the organisation. Thank you for all your thoughtful input and ideas!

Now, we’re both excited and a little nervous to finally share the result with you.

More clarity, fewer clicks – wishes for the new SLU Aqua website

Here are some of the preferences we received regarding the new SLU Aqua website:

  • It should be easy to find the right information. The old website was often perceived as confusing, with too many clicks and a search function that didn’t quite deliver.

  • More images, less text.

  • The right content for the right audience: Tailor the content to suit different target groups.

  • Environmental monitoring and assessment need a clearer presence on the new site.

  • Show us the data! Users want more visibility of the data we collect, the reports we write, and the new findings we contribute.

  • Clearer and better information about who we are, what we do, what we produce, and how we can support others.

Target audiences

We have developed SLU Aqua’s new website to meet the needs of several key groups:

  • Professional users – such as decision-makers, commissioning bodies, media, researchers, funding agencies, industry organisations, new employees, businesses, commercial fishers, and other parts of SLU.

  • Interested public – including recreational fishers, nature enthusiasts, people concerned about climate and the environment, and others who want to learn more about the state of our fish populations in lakes, rivers, coastal waters and the sea.

  • Prospective students – those considering studying with us and who want to explore what we do.

How we built the new SLU Aqua website

To make the website as relevant and user-friendly as possible – while meeting the needs of our target audiences – we’ve built a new SLU Aqua website that:

  1. Is easy to navigate – with a clear structure, logical navigation, fewer clicks, and a design that aligns with the rest of SLU’s web presence.

  2. Uses accessible language – we focus on plain language (Swedish "Klarspråk") and engaging visuals that capture interest.

  3. Has well-balanced content and is available in both Swedish and English.

  4. Features a new and improved entry point to our important work in environmental monitoring and assessment.

Would you like to create a research project page or a research group page?

Get in touch with Josefine, Sofia, or Teresa – we’ll be happy to help you get started.

Would you like your own profile page?

If you’d like to, you can create your own profile page. To do so, you need to be connected to the SLU network, but no special access rights are required. The profile page replaces the CV page from the previous website.
Create you own profile page here.

Link to the staff web

Previously, there was a link directly to the staff web from the start page on slu.se. This has now been removed as the external web and the staff web are two separate websites. The staff web is also accessible to external visitors, which is why SLU's web editorial team wants to reduce external traffic to it. In 2026, the staff web will be rebuilt and become a closed intranet.
The address to the staff web is internt.slu.se/en

Tip! Save the address of the staff web as a bookmark directly in your browser.

So, what’s new on the rest of the slu.se website?

These changes apply to the entire slu.se – and of course also to SLU Aqua’s new website.

The Design

The first thing we hope will strike users is the significant upgrade to the design. There is now more order and structure, with a design system at its core that ensures the design is thoughtful and consistent throughout the entire website.

Focus on Research

The new slu.se presents research more clearly and accessibly through a new research catalogue. Users can easily find both research projects and research groups by subject.

Easier to Search and Display Subsets

More content is searchable and filterable on the new website. Examples include the research catalogue, job listings, and programme pages.

The search page itself has also been improved with a new filtering option for specific content types.

Easier for More People to Create Content

With the new site, even those who aren’t trained as web editors can contribute content via a form-based solution. This applies to profile pages (which replace the old CV pages), research catalogue entries, and certain types of events.
