Largest forest meeting of the decade to be held in 2024
Join us on the journey to the IUFRO World Congress 2024, which will be held in Sweden in June 2024. Together, we'll present research for the future.
The World Congress is held every five years and is a global meeting place for all societal actors engaged in the forest, climate and environment.
Researchers' involvement begins now
The design of the scientific programme has begun. A call for session proposals is already out and the faculty's work to develop the excursions is intensifying during the autumn. The Congress theme Forests & Society Towards 2050 points to the need for interdisciplinary collaboration. Important dates to note: please see below.
The forest's role in societal developments
As the host organisation, SLU offers all faculties the opportunity to join a broad engagement in the scientific programme and in the planning of the excursions. ‘S-fak is a global leader in forestry and ecology,’ says Göran Ericsson, Dean of the Faculty of Forest Sciences (S-fak). ‘We can share our research and continuous environmental analyses in these areas, with a focus on future needs and solutions in forestry, climate, environment and society. It is also a strength that we are collaborating over borders and have representatives from the entire Nordic-Baltic region. We have a unique opportunity to share all of our joint knowledge, participate in dialogues about the future, and be part of accelerating the green transition.’
Call for session proposals – deadline 13 October
All researchers who share an interest in the future of forests, climate, the environment, societal development and forest-related science are invited to submit contributions to the scientific programme for the IUFRO World Congress 2024. In line with the spirit of the Congress title - Forests & Society Towards 2050 ‐ the program will highlight the contributions to the UN sustainable development goals and beyond. For more information, please see the links below.
Local excursions for a global audience
In the middle of the congress week, the delegates will participate in scientific excursions related to Forests and Society Towards 2050 in the Stockholm area. The excursions are one of the highlights of the congress. Immediately following the congress, participants will also have the opportunity to visit other parts of Sweden, the Nordics and the Baltics on longer excursions. The programme, which reflects both scientific and cultural content, is arranged by IUFRO members in the region. The programme also includes visits to several of SLU's operational locations and research parks. Over fifty excursions will be carried out, involving researchers from several faculties at SLU. - ‘Take the opportunity to join our common journey toward 2024,’ says Fredrik Ingemarson, Director IUFRO World Congress 2024.
SLU's hosting mission
Sweden's hosting mission is anchored at the ministerial level, with SLU as responsible authority in cooperation with other authorities. The hosting of the IUFRO World Congress 2024 contributes to strengthening Sweden's international role in the work with the global sustainability goals in forest, climate and environmental issues. The mission is a collaborative initiative along with our neighbouring countries in the Nordics and Baltics.

Forests and Society towards 2050
2050 is a landmark year to achieve the vision of Living in Harmony with Nature of the UN CBD as well as the target of net-zero emissions. With a focus on forest contribution to the UN 2030 Agenda and its sustainable development goals (SDG), the IUFRO World Congress in Stockholm 2024 will help streamline forest research agendas, furthering dialogues and cross-sector cooperation, and promote the multi-functionality of forests and their services.
