GCUA 2030 has been hosting the workshop "Take charge of your career as an early career researcher" in collaboration with Postdoc Training in Australia. Vera, one of the participants, shares her thoughts about the workshop and how it might help her in her future career.

The workshop “Take charge of your career as an early career researcher” was a great opportunity to work on professional development and share experiences with other participants. It contains a number of practical tools to analyse yourself as a professional and to structure your vision for the next steps. It also puts you in contact with a bunch of nice and smart people from different countries and universities.

The whole 2-days workshop is divided into 4 big modules, each with its own topic and goal. In the first module we worked with the strength and linked them to the options in the job market. The second module was devoted to career planning and contained some very useful exercises. In the third module we investigated our existing networks and worked on discovering ways to extend them. The fourth module was about sharpening your profile and presenting it in a best way.

I am very satisfied with the workshop content and with the professionalism of the instructor. As a result of my participation, I have now a set of mind maps, self-evaluation documents and even more important, action plans for the future. These materials can be used immediately, but that will also have a value after time because of their flexibility – it is possible to return to these documents and update them to the situation.

I highly recommend this workshop to all PhD students and post-docs, but it brings the most benefit for those who are closer to a final stage of their project.
