The expansion of students at animal education programmes

Published: 27 October 2021

Planning for the expansion of veterinary and veterinary nursing programs continues. The Vice-Chancellor discusses with the Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation about the details that still remain to be resolved. The project is now being formed and steering-, project- and reference groups are being staffed.

SLU plans for an increase in the number of veterinary and veterinary nursing students in the next few years.

– The pace of expansion will be decided in the coming months, when we have information from the government and parliament. We must plan for flexible solutions that can be grown further if needed, says Dean Rauni Niskanen.

Now known bottlenecks are, for example, dissection and pathology wards and internships and slaughterhouses, in addition to the teachers.

– Now we will investigate the local needs. The importannce is that this includes the needs for our extra mural training and our practical training. But also include lessons we learned during the pandemic with digital solutions, says Rauni.

This also includes investigating whether, for example, Swedish Livestock Research Centre Lövsta and the other animal facilities as well as the University Animal Hospital can be used more efficiently during the training. The same applies to better coordination between the subject areas of animal science, animal care and veterinary medicine.

In addition, there are recruitments of new teachers.

– We must not forget the research. If it is senior lecturers who are recruited, they must of course be provided with opportunities for research, Rauni emphasizes.
